Rats!

Fresh from the tables of our painting class, we submit the following for the record.  Deep in the darkest recesses of your favorite fantasy town / village, trouble is gnawing at the gutterbones.  These rats are off the chain, and they are coming for an adventurer near you!

These were really easy, and the class was able to bust them out while learning how to use various inks.  Some are Reaper Bones, some are old Ral Partha and some are Milton-Bradley plastics from their venture with a once respected company which we won't talk about here.  The older ones needed bases, and Wargames Factory has some cool thin bases which added the correct "heft" to these small pieces.

The entire group was simply based white.  We used a combination of various brown(ish) inks to create different tones, but generally speaking any brown will work.  Apply a light brown to the entire model to create a slightly brownish rat skin.  A second application of a darker ink where fur would be will create a nice "coat" for the model.  Be artistic with this - by applying the ink in layers on the model in different staged patterns, we were able to use two applications to finish the model.  By avoiding the eyes, ears, feet and tail with the second, darker application you get a nice "mouse" rendition.

Paint Guide
  1. Basecoat White
  2. Light Brown Ink Basecoat
  3. Darker Brown Ink Fur
  4. Grey Base to match Dungeon or Sewer.
  5. Green Ink for moss on the stones, or a Grayish Texture / Flock.
Rats can be deadly.  They are one of the first "monsters" many adventurers have to deal with.  Now, we have a good number of painted critters to slice and dice.  Possibly roll them into one pack and drive them at our enemies.  Who knows?  You can do a lot with rats.

Mercenary Archer Regiment

Our Introduction to Miniature Painting class has shown some nice results!  During Lessons 1 & 2, we learned the basics of putting brush to paint to model - and already the proof is in the...arrow quivers?  This entire regiment of Mercenary Archers for our Sword & Sorcery games was painted by the class during those lessons, and if I may say so they look absolutely gorgeous.

"Let's give 'em a volley, lads!"
Once the regiment had been painted after Lesson 2, I had the pleasure of using Army Painter QuickShade (Strong Tone) on the unit.  After dipping all 20 of them, I applied Anti-Shine to get rid of the glossy residue left by the QuickShade once it dries.  The process worked out quite well on these models - perhaps it's their 1-piece simplicity.

The basing material was a mix of some ruddy, Dark Brown flock I had leftover from other projects mixed with some other hues.  Army Painter's Grass Green Flock provides a lovely light green accent, while Gale Force 9's Grass flock mixes it's dark green with the dark brown to make a nice Autumn look.

These mercenaries make good skirmishers, as well.
These warriors will likely see battle many times in many fashions.  Whether conscripted into your Baronial Army as you carve out a domain in Mystara, or raining arrows on the minions of the Dragon Queen on Toril, these are some of the best equipped light troops you can obtain.  This regiment is one of the main missile units for our human armies, and the troops you recruit can be deployed anywhere in your forces / domain.

Paint Guide
  1. Krylon Ultra-Flat Camouflage Brown Spray  (Basecoat)
  2. Elf Flesh  (Flesh)
  3. Bubonic Brown  (Leggings)
  4. Catachan Green  (Coif / Beltpouch)
  5. Vermin Brown  (Wood on Bows & Arrows)
  6. Blood Red  (Arrow Fletching)
  7. Vomit Brown  (Belts)
  8. Black  (Dagger Sheath / Draw Guard)
  9. Army Painter Desert Yellow  (Dagger Hilt)
  10. Boltgun Metal  (Helmet / Arrowheads)
  11. Army Painter QuickShade Strong Tone
  12. Army Painter Anti-Gloss
  13. Mix of a Dark Brown, Army Painter Grass Green and Gale Force 9 Grass Flocks  (Base Cover)
We're going to have a ton of project logs based on our upcoming class lessons.  When the Introduction is over after ten classes, we're not quite ready to stop.  We've got some good ideas for some advanced techniques we're going to teach our class about that will really spur creativity.  Best of all, we'll have more painted stuff for the club to game with!

T-34 Tank Corps, 600 Points

T-34 Squadron and Company Commander (signaling).
I've decided not to do briefings like our other forces for the Flames of War armies.  There's enough going on about the Great War I felt I'd just leave the history pretty much alone...my own army having little in common with it's historical namesake.  A lot of different units bore the designation "6th", but I'm not going for full on historical accuracy with my gaming army.  That would be madness, tracking it all down and making sure it was all within the boundaries of what was then on the battlefields.  For my own 6th Guards Tankovy Batalon, they start the war in December 1941 at the battle for Moscow, and are entirely fictional.

We decided to start the club at Flames of War's recommended setting for low or introductory level play - 600 pts.  Well, browsing through the armor lists I noticed that I wasn't getting any heavy armor at that level.  Everyone agreed to play at 600 pts initially, so I had to find a company that would allow me to play at all our proscribed levels, 600, 1500 and 2000.  Looking through The Eastern Front, I knew I was going to be playing Soviets.  My partner, whom I usually play doubles with, wanted Rota Razvedki at first, but after another player dropped out decided to go full on infantry with a Strelkovy Batalon.

I found exactly what I needed in the plain old Tankovy Batalon.  It's not as flashy, not as elite as the other tank companies that carry several mixed types of chassis...but there's a lot to be said about a horde of T-34's...my chosen main battle tank!

The first squadron rumbles along a dirt road in the Moscow oblast.
At 600 pts there aren't very many, to be sure. I get six tanks, a total of 1 Company HQ tank and 1 Combat Platoon of 5 more T-34's.  This cost about $70 US, since I got 1 boxed set of T-34's and a single blister for the command tank.  Easy to paint up as well...there's really not much to it.  It was, however, the first time I used pigment powders on a model, and I used Flames of War's own line.  I also picked up some powders from Vallejo as well, and will definitely be experimenting with those pigments a lot more.  Overall, I liked how it turned out.  Carefully weathered decals and just a smidgen of No.2 pencil to show chips in the paint and voila!  Each tank turned out in about an hour, and thats with plenty of drying time for the various reagents.

I used some rubbing alcohol to bind the pigment before sealing it with a matte spray.  I inked the commanders with some GW Reikland Fleshshade and that turned out very cool.  This is the first project I've tackled at this scale, and it was very satisfying.  There's something about doing a bunch of tanks at once that can't really be expressed except as AWESOME.  Also, there's the fact I will get to collect an army that consists entirely of tanks to at least 2000 points...and no one will call be cheesy or beardy for it.

That's all for now from the Eastern Front!  Remember, only a few weeks of battles left for this season...so get to the 'gate early on Game Day to make sure your guns and blades aren't quiet for another week.  We're starting AD&D early to help smooth out the difficulties we had in the moathouse last week as well, so if you're dead or want to join the game we'll have a little extra time to sort things out.

See you on Game Day!

Shaun's Moria Adventure, Le Portion De Treis - On the Table!

Greetings from the battlefield!  Perpetually late and behind posting schedule,  I figured I'd better snap some photos of Shaunny's models, since they've been done for almost a month.  Here is the third and final installment of Shaun's Moria Adventure, showcasing his 500 point Moria army.
Continued from Part 2.

With all the models ready to go, we brushed Vallejo Black Lava onto the bases to give them some texture.  After that, a quick black spray got them basecoated and primed.  The troll got a grey basecoat, as it would have a different skin tone than the goblins.  Shaunny also asked that I paint his cave troll, as he was intimidated with the model's large size and strange skin tones.  I happily obliged - I hadn't painted a troll before.

Durburz's Warband (Blackshield Drummers, 4 Blackshields & Cave Troll)

A limited palette was formed when we dug through our mountain o' paints and found all the basic colors for the goblin color scheme in the books.  No wild color experimentation here - this is about learning the basics. Thankfully, it's basically red, green and metal.  The textured bases were painted to match the Brown World table, and we thought about how to spruce them up.

Blackshield Captain's Warband (8 Goblin Spears & 4 Goblin Bows)

I have to take a moment to tell you how everyone stopped and tried to figure how this could be Shaunny's first army.  The models were looking great!  To top that off, they were coming off the paint tray a lot faster than expected for a total novice (as he claimed to be).  Shaunny seems a natural and getting the paint where it needs to go, and quickly at that.

Once the models were painted with Shaunny's surprising skill and speed, I still had to finish the troll.  First things first, however - we applied Army Painter Quickshade to the goblins, and shortly thereafter applied Anti-Gloss to tone down the sheen of the shade coat.  The results turned out fantastic, and make these goblins look worn and weathered.

I didn't apply Quickshade to the Cave Troll, instead using the opportunity to demonstrate drybrushing and inking to Shaunny.  I think it turned out nice, and the Agrax Earthshade ink we used (from GW) did a nice job of bringing the bigger piece in line with the shade on the goblins.  Now that he's armed with the basic techniques, I have no doubt we'll be seeing a lot of nifty things come from Shaunny's burgeoning paint table.

Blackshield Shaman's Warband (8 Goblin Shields & 4 Goblin Bows)

We decided to try something different this time.  For the bases, texture is good but embellishment is better.  We thought that it might look cool if the goblins were scurrying across a muddy field, so we immediately got to work with the Woodland Scenics Realistic Water.  Using some darker browns to simulate wet mud, we mucked up the bases and added the water effects to form the pools.  Some Swamp Tuft sets the base off, and breaks up the color a bit.

500 points of love, straight from the Black Pit.

500 points of Moria goblins never looked so good!   Shaunny performed well in the latest campaign with this army, but next year's event season is more promising after the completion of this project.

Bigger update to the site today with all current campaigns updated.  We've been getting more games in, so make sure your forces keep up with the magnitude of their battles!  It could get out of hand if your soldiers aren't being deployed enough, and it can really impact your campaign scores.  Plan your battles accordingly!

Lt. Caine's Skirmish Team! (15 Points)

Well, the Warmachine season is over, so for the next few months we'll be working on some other nifty modelling projects.  Yet before it's too long forgotten, I'm going to post this last season's project log as I actually got something accomplished (however small the project...)!

I finally buckled down and started painting, and turned out a 15 point force for my warcaster, Lt. Caine.  I've heard he's not all that competitive (and I certainly didn't do well in the campaign) but I don't know if it was because my force selection wasn't up to par or just being newish to Warmachine in general.  Whatever that case may be, I do think I painted some passable models.

Lt. Caine

I decided to do this project with Army Painter Quickshade, which a lot of our recent projects have been using.  This particular army is done with Strong Tone, as I prefer a darker appearance.  I used a variety of Games Workshop and Army Painter colors, and basically tried to paint the scheme from the books, which is sort of a new thing for me.

Gun Mage Captain-Adept

Warmachine has a nifty advantage in terms of painting projects.  That is, the forces are smaller than the hordes of minis you have to paint for some other games.  Not that I mind that, but I find the smaller forces for a lot of the Schedule 2 games make for satisfying opportunities to accomplish something with my downtime.

Hunter Light Warjack

Warjacks are fun to paint.  That is really the point of this entire post.

Charger Light Warjack

It makes me want to play Battletech, really.  I might really yearn for a Rifleman and a Longbow, but these 'jacks do scratch the giant robot sized itch in my heart.

Defender Heavy Warjack

I finished the bases with a combination of Autumn Blend and Autumn Foliage, by Gale Force 9.  I really liked the effect, and I'll be playing with these a lot in the future I can tell.  It's always neat to do something different for the bases, and to be quite honest I wanted to break from my "Forbidden Planet" routine for bases.

Long Range Recon (15 pts) - March 2011
Next season we're expanding to 25 points!  There will be more mayhem and 'jack handling in the Iron Kingdoms in a few months, and we're going to be seeing a lot more projects for Warmachine down the line.

Bone out!

Glorfindel's Blades

 Howdy folks!

It's high time we started some Middle-Earth Project Logs, so here's our first.  These minis are for my Rivendell army (for the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop) that I've been collecting for a few years, but haven't gotten around to painting.  I'm horribly slow at this, if you've not picked that up by the infrequency of my own project logs here on the site.

We've had more than a few project logs the past few months that deal with using Army Painters' QuickShade,  but I thought it was time to unveil what is the first project I've truly used it for on my own.  Well, I should say this is the first project I've completed on my own using QuickShade, but I'll show off some of my poor attempts at painting aliens later on.

Glorfindel is my favorite elf.  He's already smote a balrog on the slopes of Gondolin in his previous life, and now back from the Halls of Mandos to lead my force to supremacy in Middle-Earth.  I like Elrond and Erestor, but Glorfindel's always been my first choice for leader.  During this past campaign he really proved his worth many times over, and was the main reason the Enemy's forces retreated so quickly!

These models are painted with various paints from GW and Vallejo, but the true secret is the QuickShade and Anti-Gloss Spray.  These materials alter how the model shows it's colors, and the QuickShade really does wonders on the smaller models.  I'm looking forward to using these products on a variety of projects going forward, especially Flames of War.

The bases are finished to represent Mirkwood, where the battle around Dol Guldur continues to rage.  I used Games Workshops' Glade Grass, some Clump Foliage from Woodland Scenics, and another Army Painter product - Poison Ivy.  Really neat material, and this was my first attempt at using some to break up the monotony of the bases.  Definitely added to the repertoire of neat project materials.

I'll be adding more stuff for Middle-Earth Projects next season!  Until then, prepare your forces for our next Strategy Battle Game campaign!

Infinity Watch Commanders!

We have a few more minis from Captain Video to spotlight today.  These Adeptus Astartes are members of the Infinity Watch, a chapter based in our own Mardannon Sector!

Here we see the top level commanders of the chapter, poised and ready for battle.  Captain Video has painted up several HQ units, each tailored to a specific battlefield role.  Above are three of the Commanders he commonly fields, each one armed with a power sword and bolter or boltgun for close combat!

These four HQ units are a little more specialized.  Librarian and Chaplain for special missions, but the Terminator Captain and the Commander with power fist (special edition!) are for taking on tough opposition in larger games.  With this selection of HQ units, the Infinity Watch hopes to bring an unmatched versatility to battles in and around Mardannon!

These minis were painted with the same techniques as the other Infinity Watch models - painted gold and shaded, and then Army Painter Quickshade applied liberally to the armor's surface to give it that "lived in" look.

Captain Video will be bringing us new projects soon, so muster your forces and get ready to do battle when we return to Warhammer 40,000 season next Summer!

Infinity Watch Terminators and Dreadnought!

Howdy folks!  Thought I'd make a quick post this evening before I got started on some prep work, so we're going to show off some of Captain Video's burgeoning Infinity Watch chapter of Imperial Space Marines!  Today we're going to check out some of his elite units - terminators and his dreadnought!

These units were painted in the same fashion as the other models in the army...a drybrush of gold, a metallic highlight and Quickshade Strong Tone!  It really works to set off the highlighting done in various parts of the model, and adds a lot of definition to the details.  Totally worth the extra step!

The larger model benefits from having the Quickshade applied as well.  All of these were done with a 'splash-on' method, as Captain Video painstakingly applies the medium to the model with a brush.  All in all, beautiful units for a tabletop army, and I'm sure they'll see action in our next Warhammer 40,000 campaign!

The Vendetta Round begins this weekend!  It's your last chance to impact the narrative on planet Nokk!  Get your last hits in this month!  Vendettas end on September 1st, so don't delay - you can still change the way your army fares in the campaign!

Infinity Watch Devastators and Veteran Sergeants

The Infinity Watch is the Mardannon Sector's most prominent indigenous Astartes Chapter, and today we have a few more pics of Captain Video's army.  This Devastator Squad has engaged the enemies of the Imperium many times and proved it's worth on the field of battle!

Like the rest of his Infinity Watch force, they were basecoated black, drybrushed through several stages of gold and detailed.  Then, Quickshade Strong Tone was applied to the entire model, nicely rounding out the definition on the armor and equipment.  Notice the 2nd Edition Astartes?

The unit has 10 space marines, and is equipped with the standard range of weapons: a plasma cannon, lascannon, missile launcher and heavy bolter.  It's a ubiquitous setup, but will cost you a good chunk of points to field in it's entirety.  The full 10 warriors make the unit quite resilient, as units with only 1 combat squad can be very vulnerable to enemy attacks as they can be wiped out before they can return fire.

Here we have the Infinity Watch's highly experienced Veteran Sergeants!  Captain Video runs his units with 10 men, but most of those don't include a Veteran in the main list.  When he needs to, he can swap out the squad leaders with these Veteran models to increase their anti-tank / giant monster capability with power fists and plasma pistols.

The battle for Planet Nokk continues!!  Bring your Warhammer 40,000 army and set it on the table to have a say in the war!  Even if you're not part of the current campaign, come get you some action on the table and put your army's mark on Nokk!!

Building Planetary Empires!

We got Planetary Empires done last month for the beginning of the Brave New Waaagh!!!  The guys have been battling it out over the last few weeks on the planet Nokk, so I thought I'd post these pictures of the humble beginnings!

We resolved to complete the project as quickly as possible, but it still ended up taking a week for Planetary Empires and the Hive City Tiles.  We had an idea in mind and thought we'd dedicate the Warhammer 40,000 empires box to our new set of "Brown World" terrain, since we also have Mighty Empires and plan on doing that one in a "Green World" motif.  So, welcome to planet Nokk!

Jerry Wargate and I gathered our materials and began by spraying all the tiles with the Army Painter's Desert Yellow spray primer, which gave it a nice shade of dirt.  I heartily recommend the Army Painter's line of products, and have linked their main site here and on the main links list, so check out all their really cool products that make our modelling quick and easy.

Spraying the tiles.  Remember kids, fumes are noxious!
We took the base colored tiles and clipped them from the sprue.  With a bottle of Desert Yellow paint we filled in the clip marks and touched any tiles up we needed to.  Some tiles needed a second spray altogether so we just gave it to them all at once.

Base colored spaceport tile.  The clip together teeth are tight!!
Then we began painting them.  There were 50 total tiles, (48 in the box and 2 Hives) and about 8 of those were only one sided.  So, 42 tiles x 2 sides each took about 3 actual working days to complete between the two of us.

It was really fun going through and choosing color schemes for the tiles.  Going by some of GW's illustrations, there's a lot of ways this can be put together - but our agenda was simple.  Planet Nokk is a dry and nearly barren wasteland, with few trees and little water.  It was easy!

A vision of diligence.
After all the tiles were painted, they got a bath of Quickshade Strong Coat. This is another Army Painter product that by now I'm sure everyone is familiar with.  If not, check it out on their main site - it's a gas once you learn to accept it's use.  It's a bit like that liquid oxygen fluid in The Abyss.  You don't want to start it, but once you do it's actually pretty cool.

It's difficult for me to adapt to use of the Quickshade, because I usually use a black undercoat and use that to help me shade through all the stages of my painting technique.  I have a fairly developed style and Quickshade makes a mockery of it - so I basically have to paint in reverse.

If you can develop a style that plays to it's strengths, the Quickshade is an invaluable tool.  Luckily, I had Jerry there and you can check out his videos on the subject here and in the links section.

Shaded, not antiglossed.
Of course, when using the Quickshade, you probably want to apply some of their Anti-Gloss as well.  Personally, many of you know I break from accepted practice by applying gloss coats to many of my miniatures.  To me, a gloss coat adds a special quality of togetherness to a model, and many of my armies have gloss coated miniatures.  However, the sheer weight of time that I've been collecting models means that even in a single army you can find gloss and matte varnished miniatures.

Since I've started using Quickshade, I've come to the light.  Matte seal is the way to go on minis simply because if you do them all the same way, upon close inspection they all appear more similar.  Not that the gloss coat on some of the models and matte coat on others is distracting (there are literally too many orks to worry about that) but from an aesthetic point of view the uniformity is especially appealing to me.

Not only that, but when applying Quickshade it doesn't always dry evenly.  This means the basic coat may leave some spots shiny while others are dull.  Best option - apply an antigloss spray to the entire model!

A bombed out, ruinous crater.  Now with Anti-Gloss!
We've been playing the campaign pretty much right out of the box!  The style is fun, loose and appropriate to our gaming habits!  The finished Planetary Empires looks great with all the pieces put together and everyone has had a blast routinely checking on the fate of planet Nokk!

The Realms of the Ruthless.
We'll be doing the Mighty Empires for our next Warhammer campaign as well!  Join us at the Wargate next Sunday for more battles on Nokk, as well as a few other surprises!

Infinity Watch Tactical Squads!

Howdy folks!

Today we have a few nice pics of one the Mardannon Sector's resident Astartes Chapters - The Infinity Watch!  Captain Video has been painting these guys for a while, so we thought we'd show you more of his great looking army!

Tactical Squad Alpha-1
Tactical Squad Alpha-2

These guys were painted with gold metallics, then detailed before adding Quickshade Strong Tone.  The result is a dimmed gold that still looks clean and burnished.  The bases were created with by adding sand to the base, then painting over the sand first in black then in dark earth tones.

Tactical Squad Bravo-1
Tactical Squad Bravo-2
Overall the effect is very nice.  You can probably expect to see this army in action again during the Summer Warhammer 40,000 campaign, but Captain Video hasn't revealed exactly what force he'll be commanding yet.  One thing is for certain - the Imperium will need plenty of help to stem the green tide that is rising!

On another note, if you haven't signed up for the Wargate's Summer campaign, Brave New Waaagh!!, then make sure to sign up this Thursday or Sunday so we can get you a spot on the roster!!  Don't be afraid - everyone has to be hacked to pieces by orks at some point in their life.

Captain Video's Infinity Watch Scouts & Techmarine

Howdy folks!

The guys here at the club have been at work for the past few months making sure the Wargate has plenty of supplies and other cool stuff to game with over the summer.  We've got a few things planned out, and one thing we can assure you is there will be no shortage of cool scenarios.  This summer will also see us branch out into a second schedule for wargaming as well!

In that light I'd like to start bringing you some more work from our other members.  Captain Video, a longtime contributor to the club, has some new finished models we're going to highlight over the next few weeks as he finishes up his Infinity Watch space marines, a codex chapter that has stood guard in the Mardannon Sector since time immemorial.  Here are a few pics of his units, so if you locate them, you can destroy them on the battlefield!

These models were painted using Army Painter Strong Tone, and were quick to get ready.  The gold armor was highlighted, and the Quickshade did the rest!

The techmarine has a few custom servitors!  This large unit I almost couldn't fit in the picture!  There are actually five servitors in this unit, but I kind of fudged getting the one behind the techmarine in the photo - which is all my fault!  I was taking several pics of Captain Video's army, which you'll get to see this next month...and I guess it just slipped.  That's what I get for photographing so many models at once!

Don't forget the Coldsnap draft on Sunday, one o'clock in the afternoon!  Those of you attending should RSVP a second time on Thursday just so we can make sure everyone who's coming has the correct info.  See you on Game Day!

Dirty Greg's Despoilers of the Blight!

Howdy!   The Wargate's revvin' up plenty of gaming goodness this week, folks - but today we're going to be talking about the warband who won our Death in the Delve campaign a few months ago.  It's Dirty Greg and his Despoilers of the Blight!

Greg painted these back for the Mordheim campaign, but we just got some pics yesterday when Jerry stopped by and snapped these up for the blog.  This is a Mordheim Possessed Warband, and Greg used Quickshade Strong Tone on these.  They are based with slate from a Warhammer 40,000 basing kit.

Here we have the Magister and his closest toadies.  From left to right, it's a Darksoul, Possessed, Magister and Mutant.  It's no coincidence the Mutant looks a lot like Krampus...

Here are the Despoiler Brethren.  These guys are tough, and pack a wallop with those axes.  There were so many axes in the campaign, almost no one got an armor save.  Ever.  Note the model with the bow - during our campaign, another Possessed player complained about not having missile weapons, or models available that depicted bows.  I was about to tell him about Chaos Archers in Battle Masters, Empire Militia or Huntsmen, Bretonnian Bowmen and all sorts of other ideas where to find conversion pieces - but all I ended up saying was "Greg built one."

Beastman Gors!  These guys are strong in Mordheim, and we all quickly learned how fast we need to deal with Strength 4 creatures with axes.  Over time, his warband grew, and Greg added more implements of destruction to their armaments.  The full-on-dead-bodies warband was actually quite a sight to behold, and quite intimidating on the other side of the (very small!) board.

We started hiring mercenaries pretty early on in the campaign, and Dirty Greg simply would not allow himself to be out-dirtied.  These models represent his Hired Swords, namely a Pit Fighter, Ogre Bodyguard and Warlock!  These were done around Christmas, and I took to derisively calling the Pit Fighter "Krys Kryngal" every chance I got.

Greg did well for himself during this last campaign, and his victory has directed the ongoing saga of the Khazid Grimaz and southwestern Wissenland that we are conducting here at the Wargate.  Chaos has a firm grip on the underground city now that the greenskins have been pushed out.

Dirty Greg must have felt bad that the Khazid was now in even more dire straits thanks to his big win.  In the new campaign, Welkommen Zu Wissenland, he's now playing High Elves!  Can't wait to see what those turn out like!

Stay tuned folks!  We'll have more Army Briefings and Project Logs to show you as we get closer to summertime!

Josh's Adherents of the Repeated Mean

Welcome back to the Wargate!!

Today we're going to talk about Josh's new Mordheim warband, the Adherents of the Repeated Mean.  A few interesting things about this warband, and Josh took a moment to tell us a few interesting things about his warband.

Firstly, this warband has been formed of two separate Mordheim Possessed boxed sets.  Half the models once belonged to Dirty Greg, but with all of that stuff on his Mountain of Models, he never quite got to them.  Josh loves pointy hats, and well....

Another nifty thing about this warband is that it's the first project at the Wargate that was completed entirely with Army Painter supplies.  The primer and paints were all purchased in one of their Wargamer Starter Paint sets.  The paints checked out great.  Some settling did occur, but when they were shaken (not stirred) they performed admirably.

Josh used a nifty gimmick to break up the monotony of the figure's poses.  These are pretty old, and they only cast a few different warriors.  Check out the pics above and you'll see an alternating paint scheme that is really cool.  In practice, this gives him the ability to dictate different statistics or skills for individual warriors, as they are each unique (even though they are twins).

The models were shaded with Quickshade Strong Tone, and the bases were made to resemble greasy, green warpstone!  All in all, the project looks slick as all get out.

We're going to be taking a look at some of Josh's other projects, as well as some other stuff by the guys here at the 'gate.

And remember, Magister Kakikak sez "Get your Warbands painted, nerds!"

Jerry's Got Beastman Aides!

Our friend Jerry has been hard at work on what every exploding Chaos Herdsman needs - Beastman Aides!

That's right...aides to destruction!

With the newest edition of Warhammer out and the Wargate's own burgeoning Mordheim campaign coming soon, we've all been dragging out models and getting new warbands together. Jerry's never been much of a Warhammer guy, but he's been into 40k longer than ME so it should come as no surprise that he's finally come around full circle and has stepped into the arena for fantasy battles with his new army! I'll let him explain in more detail!

The Beastman Army Project VS The Army Painter

Hi, Jerry is my name but I am known here online at the Wargate as Warmaster Laserwulfe. I have been a member of the Wargate and alongside Warmaster Dave for 15 years. I have jumped back into modeling and wargaming with a flash and a bang! From my early and young beginings in AD&D 2nd edition, Magic Unlimited and Warhammer 40,000 2nd edition, life and fantasy have brought me to where I am today.

After many years of playing and roleplaying, I decided to re-emmerse myself into modeling and painting, with a vegenace known only by Chuck Norris. The Army Painter supplies have been my shining icon of rebirth. A great inventory of primers and quickstains, paints and tools, The Army Painter has been a big help. Also restocking my paint shelf has been good Games Workshop and Valejo paints, the old stand-bys of the old days and beyond.

This has been an expensive rebirth but also quite rewarding. I've dropped my 14 year nicotine addiction with the help of painting and model projects, and a supportive home. This has been a huge plus, finding my time literally absorbed silently by these projects. I have found this to be the greatest reward in the end - patience.

Patience and forethought is important to the modeler, giving and making shape in the mind first before the first sprue is ever cut. A hobby enthusiast's skills age like wine, slowly circling and coming to full revolution as time goes on.

Anyways enough about me and time. I have done several youtube videos over tyranid painting and quick army staining as some of you might know. Now marks a new time and new army to be stocked and locked by the old dog. Warhammer Fantasy Beastmen!! Awesome models!! Awesome Army!! It is right up my alley!! Skulls and evil satyr looking henchmen, minotaur guards, and spell throwing goat lords who dont take no lip!!

I'm very excited to have the opportunity to present and show step by step the process of quick painting this army for you at home to learn and use yourself on your own hobby projects. I will be starting a full out project log and explain the process here on the Wargate as well as with accompanying youtube videos. Please use my work to enhance your own or share with other hobbyists.

A mighty shout goes out to Warmaster Dave! His works and magiks have long since kept a local circle gaming and interacting. Also to the Army Painter, for putting such awesome supplies out there for us to use.

Enjoy and learn,
Jerry
