House Ralpar

Today's post is by Jerry Wargate, who regales us with the tales of the elf-lords of the Gnarley Forest...

First Son of Ralpar, Lord of the North Umber, Ruros was raised in the last light of the once majestic circle of elvish royalty. Pushing away the court scholars best efforts to educate and refine him, Ruros preferred the clash of steel and the weight of the armor to the proper etiquette and taboo of court.  A warrior prince by nature, Ruros felt no stranger to the labor of the guardsmen or the unceasing vigilance of the border watch.

As the years rolled by the King had other sons,  Ganth and Hamboné.  Ruros spent little of his life in the comfort of the court, and watched the growth of his brothers from afar.  He traveled often in secret to aid against danger where needed inside the Gnarley kingdom.

Receiving summons to his father's chambers, Ruros walked inside to find his father in an endless slumber, unable to waken from his dreams.  Chief advisors of magical power and the divinely blessed used their arts and blessings to no avail, unable to stir the King from his sleep.

The kingdom now is ruled by a Steward - Elgaldim, Second Consul of the North Umber. The King's body sustained magically, his subjects waiting with baited breath for the waking of their king.  The Brothers Ralpar adventure afar, losing Ruros’s sorrow in battle, searching for power to return home with.  Tragically, Hambone’ fell inside the Temple of Elemental Evil.

The wrath of The Sons of Ralpar has been fired against the denizens of the evil temple.

No one knows why the Lord Ralpar has fallen into his magical slumber.  There are many theories, as the Lord of the North Umber in the Gnarley Forest has many enemies.  The Brothers' Ralpar, should they survive their clash with the forces of Elemental Evil, might be in a better position to investigate the matter.

No one knows if the Lord Ralpar can even be awoken, but there are a few leads to be followed.  In Greyhawk City, there are wizards who might be able to help with the answer.  In the Gnarley itself, the druids work to find the source of the evil power that has overcome the regent.

All in all, it is a dark day for the elves of the Gnarley Forest.  In the back of everyone's mind, they know something evil lurks deep in the woods...something that has designs on the lands of the North Umber.  Perhaps the brothers will be successful in finding some information, or some clue that leads them to the truth.  The remaining blood kin of Ralpar have a daunting quest - and that's after they clash with the forces of Elemental Evil...and whatever else Oerth might throw their way.

Indian Territory, 1875

Howdy folks!

Today's post is an update for the ongoing World of Darkness campaign, The Rough Edge of Night.  By the time I post this, the campaign page will be updated with an adventure log, so be sure to check that out even if you're familiar with it, as it will put things in a little better perspective.  The game will be moving to Schedule 1 for a short while after Upon An Oaken Throne finishes, so everyone can use this post and the adventure log to catch up on the action before being thrust into the thick of it!

The outlook of the tribes in the Territory is grim.  The Red Band, Bullet Braid's sworn warriors, have been called from every tribe.  Braves have joined together in massive armies never before seen, and have avoided or destroyed the forces the U.S. have sent against them.  What this means is that there is more Indian power in the Territory, and that influence is about to extend further into the United States unless more soldiers can be mustered - something the government seems unable to do.

The decreased presence of the whites will mean several things to those in and around the Indian Territory.  A new era of the frontier is about to begin, one where the laws are made with guns and knives instead of in a book.  The true battle for the West is about to begin, and it might not be the one you expect.

Native tribes not affiliated directly with the Red Band may or may not be hostile.  Red Band warriors will always be hostile to whites, but will not always attack.

There are four major settlements the campaign is concerned with:  Ft. Grant, Primrose, Round Bend and Smokefall Ridge.  Ft. Grant is in Texas proper and serves as the "big city" in the campaign, but the other three do not have the same sort of support and conveniences.  It is up to the players to develop the settlements through roleplay and influence.

The Characters

The following important characters are PC's in the campaign and thus will have a significant impact on the storyline.  Here are brief descriptions, along with some other relevant information and their individual goals.

  • Ignacio Madera - A Mexican worker at the Yellow Rose, Madera spends most of his time with horses.  He's attempting to save money to buy land by working honestly in Smokefall Ridge.  Highest Dice Pool: Dexterity + Firearms (6)
  • Samuel Brady - A firebrand lawyer from back East, Brady has made it his business to help the Natives understand and navigate the laws of the white men by asserting their land rights in court.  Highest Dice Pool: Manipulation + Persuasion (Public Speaking) (8)
  • Caleb Tinker - A gunsmith who's been drifting, trying to start his life over.  He's recently come to light in Smokefall Ridge, and now has a gun store open for business there.  Highest Dice Pools: Dexterity + Firearms (Multiple Specialties) or Craft (Gunsmith) (9)
  • Dr. Frederick Jameson - An intelligent man with many problems, Doc Jameson has eyes on settling down and opening a practice in Smokefall.  Highest Dice Pool: Intelligence + Medicine (Multiple Specialties) (7)
  • Hoyalli - A Choctaw shaman, Hoyalli encountered the others in the Spirit World on a vision quest.  Now he has a medicine lodge near Smokefall Ridge, to help change the spiritual direction of the land.  Highest Dice Pool: Composure + Occult (Superstitions) (9)
  • Juan Ortega - A goatherder from Mexico who has obtained much of the plotted land north of Smokefall.  He plans on raising goats in the Indian Territory and generally being fat and happy.  Highest Dice Pool: Dexterity + Crafts (Pottery) (6)
  • Seamus the Irish - An Irish immigrant wandering the land as a gunslinger and outlaw, he obtained a small parcel of land to the north of Smokefall and has been staying there.  Highest Dice Pool: Dexterity + Firearms (Multiple Specialties) (9)
  • John Skinner - A trapper who's recently come down out of the mountains to rejoin society, this middle aged wilderness scout has seen many strange things in the Indian Territory.  Highest Dice Pools:  Intelligence + Academics, Crafts (Tanning), Investigation or Medicine (6)
  • James Douglass - A distressed plantation owner dispossessed during the war, Douglass has been wandering the south trying to find a spot in a new life.  Highest Dice Pool:  Presence + Persuasion (Public Speaking) (6)

The campaign has lasted through the month of July, 1875.  When we pick up the campaign once more on Schedule 1, two weeks will have passed in Smokefall.  A lot of legwork can get done, but here's a basic rundown on some of the character's agendas and how the downtime will affect them.

  • Samuel Brady has heard back from the Governor of Texas concerning the Land Office in Smokefall.  The attorney must now turn his attention to the Federal Government and the U.S. Attorney - for those lands fall under the purview of the U.S. Military and the Commission of Indian Affairs.  Congress is considering several new acts that will severely change how the tribes, and thier lands, are considered in the eyes of the law.
  • Caleb Tinker has his gun shop up and running.  He's even had a few customers...
  • Doc Jameson got his pharmaceutical order.  He can now set up a fairly well equipped laboratory.
  • Hoyalli and friends have built a medicine lodge just east of Smokefall.  He is currently searching for a totem spirit...
If your character wasn't mentioned, it's because I need more info!  Leave us a comment on how you'll spend those two weeks, or hit me up on Facebook or Yahoo! to get in your two weeks of out-of-character game time!

See you on Game Day!

Dark Heresy: Under A Vast Grey Sky Characters

Greetings!

For the last few weeks we've been playing in a Dark Heresy game called Under A Vast Grey Sky.  In this game, the players have been charged by the Ordo Hereticus to root out the taint of heresy on the planet Lucruzu Prime, deep in the Vae Salubrious subsector of Mardannon.  Here they have run across several issues, and the investigation hasn't gone according to plan at all - mostly because there hasn't been one.

I've been trying to compile some data on the characters, but they are quite - elusive.  I present here a short primer on a few of the agents of the Inquisition present on Lucruzu, from the point of the view of the Ordo Hereticus, going clockwise in the photo-log above. This represents Inquisitor Mandera's main operative cell.

  • Able - One of the 'Sons of Vittium' hive gang, this youthful acolyte was given to Mandera as part of a tithe from the gang itself.  Assigned to Lucruzu mission with the rest of the hive gangers.
  • Kull - Not much is known about where this feral warrior originated, but he has been one of Comptroller Bosch's bodyguards for several years.  Assigned to Lucruzu Prime to provide added muscle to the unit.
  • Khan - An acolyte drawn from the holds of the Abyssinia, an ancient Chartist vessel, this adept bears Inquisitor Mandera's rosette.  He has been involved in the Inquisitor's machinations for some time, without knowledge of such.  Activated to act as liaison to Imperial institutions planetside.
  • Lizzie -  Originally from Attono Vittium, this plucky hive scum somehow managed to stow away aboard the Abyssinia after the Inquisitor gathered his agents from there.  She was sentenced to death by the ship's security ratings, but Comptroller Bosch noted that she had enough wit to get aboard the ship in the first place.  Lizzie was made to swear allegiance to the ordo, and sent planetside with the others to test her value.
  • Shi-319 - A death cult assassin long sworn to the service of the Emperor, this mysterious figure is absolutely unfathomable.  Even the gender is unknown.
  • Murkul - The tech priest of the group has also only been recently activated to direct Inquisitorial service, and was aboard the Abyssinia for the last part of it's long trade route.  Since arriving planetside, he has spent a great deal of time securing weapons from the manufactorums in Domagoshch.
  • Caine - Another hive ganger from Attono Vittium, this older warrior served in the Xenos Wars on that world against the vile Eldar.  Activated along with other elements from Attono Vittium, this acolyte was added to the unit for his extensive military training.
  • Metalus - A hardened Arbitrator, Metalus is a highly devoted servant of the Emperor.  Inquisitor Mandera noticed the Metalus' faith during a policing action, and seconded him to his retinue as he returned to the Abyssinia. Activated on Lucruzu Prime to add knowledge and influence with various Imperial institutions planetside.

Feel free to comment on your characters to add details I may have left out that you want recorded for posterity!

Tomorrow is Krampus Day!  Make sure to tell your little ones the old tales, just in case they get the idea there's no downside to being bad!

Chicago: Hunting Humans Character Profiles

Chicago: Hunting Humans
Character Development
by Scriveners Swearingen and Hannan

As Hunting Humans enters it's third week, we are really hitting the stride of the game. Participation will be up next game as we all become more familiar with all the things this new toy gives us. The new system is fairly straightforward, and at the same time more simple and more complex than the old. The setting itself is also coming into focus, as is the gist of the game - it's a tale of vengeance and conspiracy which we have yet to fully uncover, if we even live that long.In this article, we examine the characters that are currently alive and participating in the strange chain of events connected to the Phoenix Project. These are the player characters that are driving the storyline of the new game. They have stepped, willing or unwilling, into a confrontation with a "shadow government" that now wants them all dead. The characters now begin a race against time to discover the secrets that will save their lives, or seal their fates forever.

Dr. Van Dagon

Dr. Dagon, or just "The Doctor" was a court psychologist who had his feet placed firmly on the ground. Having worked in the prison system and with innumerable disturbed patients, his work has revealed the true horror of the human psyche to him, but he has always had faith in the ability of the mind to heal itself, just as the body does. In practice, this has mixed results.

A family man with strict self-discipline, he truly wants to help his patients and those around him - but the streets of Chicago have taken their toll on Dr. Dagon.  He developed a program named "Phoenix", a radical therapy program designed to rehabilitate criminal mentalities through normal human interaction and activity.  The program had been running for about one week during the events of the first game session, but now the program has been scrapped and "re-imagined" into a military insurgency designed to root out and destroy the men responsible for a number of heinous acts.  The Doctor can only then do what is right, and works with the ISA to become the handler of the new "Phoenix Project".  Only now, he must mold the criminal psyches he once sought to save into successful espionage unit.

Ralph Wiggins

This 17 year old high school student is anything but typical. After all, how could you call a teenager who wears leather breeches and carries a replica Apache warclub in his back pack typical? Ralph was one of the Doctor's first charges, and is obsessed with wolves and other wild animals - especially their skin. Ralph is an especially skilled scout, and often acts in a low-key surveillance or reconnaissance role.

Giuseppe Puzzo

Not long ago, this unassuming fellow was a low level Mafia thug, and he still has some family ties in the local criminal underworld. Once a drug trafficker by trade, Giuseppe was keen to find any new avenue he could take to get the promotion and recognition he desired. The bosses have had their eyes on him for a while, but now he's been dragged into the Phoenix Project. He seems to enjoy his new work, but how far he's come from his "family" roots remains to be seen. Whether or not his loyalty is divided or in question, his connections can certainly help in the Phoenix Project's less-than-legal agenda.

Wyatt "Earp" Roberts

A perfect product of his time, this suburban "thug" (i.e. wannabe hip-hop 'gangsta') swings his ego and his trust fund all around parts of Chicago. White boys shouldn't necessarily play around out here, but this hasn't deterred the young rap enthusiast. Wyatt has disappeared following the incident at the loft...though we are sure the ISA didn't overlook him during the weeks that followed.

Randy Ball

At 26 years of age, Randy is a self-styled "techno-nerd". How
ever, he is quite athletic, to the point of being quite skilled in parkour - the art of free-running. When he's not flipping up buildings, he's probably hacking into whatever computer target the Phoenix Project needs - or porn sites. Randy fills an important niche in the team, as his grasp of computer science allows insight and access where otherwise none would be had. More than once a casual remark by this unassuming young man has caused the other members of the team to alter their course to a more logical and ultimately benificial end. As a member of the team, his chief responsibility lies in computer manipulation, a task at which he excels.

J.B. Andersen

A veteran of the Vietnam War, J.B. Andersen served his country with honor and loyalty - and now it seems that country may have betrayed him. An expert in covert operation and espionage, he has proven to be a particular challenge for the "shadow government" to eliminate. Now, after finally resurfacing in the city of Chicago, J.B. thought he could live the rest of his twilight days in peace. But when you have as many hidden enemies as this man, all of whom will unhesitatingly risk life and limb to capture or harm you...such things are pipe dreams. However, fate is fickle, and a bizarre series of incidents have led J.B. to a position he has only dreamed he was capable of ever reaching. Newly appointed by the ISA as the Field Commander for the "re-imagined" Project Phoenix, Andersen could finally get what he's needed for the past twenty years...revenge.

Khaliv Valdez
Detective Valdez had worked for the Chicago PD for many years before being assigned to the original Phoenix Therapy for anger management. However, during the last few weeks so much has happened to him he can hardly keep his head straight. He's been suspended, re-instated, and attached indefinitely to a paramilitary unit made up of crazy people.

He is haunted by the horrific things he has seen on the beat, and it fills him with rage. Even before assignment to the new Phoenix Project, he would often take things into his own hands when dealing with the criminal element of the city. His police training and information connections make him an invaluable investigative asset to the team.

Gi Gi La'mour
Once a small time singer who aspired to fame and fortune via the seedy clubs and dives of Chicago, Gi Gi is an attractive young woman who by a stroke of very ill fortune managed to land herself directly in the middle of some serious business. Gi Gi has been attached to the Phoenix Project as a operative who is capable of using feminine wiles to further the agenda of the team. Unable to get out of the present situation, she's willing to go as far as she can - though she's no real fighter, she has been given rudimentary training during her time on the island. Very soon, the Phoenix Project will call upon her to perform her duty. In that moment, Gi Gi knows that she will have to act boldly - and she happens to act very well.

Agent Simon Doan

When the ISA appropriated the Phoenix Project, Agent Simon Doan was brought in to help ready the new soldiers for combat on the ISA's island training complex. Doan is a career soldier, and started his special forces training as a SEAL in the U.S. Navy. He then spent some time as a CIA operative and has seen quite a few theaters across the middle-east and eastern Europe. Appointed as "Tactical Advisor" to the Phoenix Project, he provides combat insight to the team at the ground level.

Doan is a very cold and distant person, less haunted by the atrocities he's witnessed (and performed) than he is shaped by them. He cares little for his enemies lives or their sense of self-worth, often using degrading and painful methods of torture, psychological and otherwise. In his reasoning, he does what he must for his country...nothing more, nothing less. It's a dirty job (torturing and killing enemies of the state), and someone has to do it.
